The napkin can go in several different places. The napkin may be folded and placed in the centre of the dinner plate, under the plate or to the left of the forks. Alternatively, you may place a folded napkin underneath the forks. The napkin ring is optional.
In a Restaurant - Place the napkin on your lap immediately upon seating.
At a Dinner Party - Let the host or hostess take the lead. Once the host or hostess unfolds his or her napkin you may do the same.
When leaving the table temporarily, put your napkin on your chair.
Your napkin stays on your lap until you leave the table.
At the end of the meal fold your used napkin and place it to the left of your place setting.
